Mancow Releases "Commandments for Radio Personalities"

Several months ago when the outrage hit the fan over KDND's bladder-busting stunt, and a woman died of water poisoning, Mancow Muller started up what he called "The Foundation for Responsible Radio." Mancow proposed that the industry work together to adopt a single set of standards that is good for both the audience and advertisers. Today, Mancow's Commandments for Radio Personalities" were released:

  1. Thou shalt never endanger listeners.
  2. Racism is always a dumb idea.
  3. Complacency on the inside loses listeners from the outside. Work at your art.
  4. Contests must always be straight forward. (Being too cute with contests can be costly.)
  5. Advertisers pay you. They are your friends.
  6. Have a delay button (preferably 20 seconds or more) and when in doubt use it.
  7. Don't dis someone's religion.
  8. Don't let anyone curse in your studio ever. Get them out of that habit. If they are comfortable with cursing, it can someday accidentally get on the radio
  9. Instruct guests on your radio standards so they don't get you in trouble.
  10. Do good. (We're not on earth to mark time. We're here to make a difference).
"With all that has been happening to our industry of late (especially against a back drop of Imus' firing and Opie and Anthony's "rape Condi Rice" controversy), I think it is now high time we all work together to intervene and help our industry develop "survival instincts" through self policing, rather than doing nothing, and waiting for those outside our industry to do it for us – in which case, it will be done in the most egregious fashion," remarked Talk Radio Network-FM CEO Mark Masters. A Better Portrait Of Radio Listening
According to Inside Radio-The People Meter arrives, and Arbitron says it's a better portrait of radio listening.
CEO Steve Morris says the PPM should increase advertiser confidence in radio ("it's a new level of accountability"), and he says today's results from Philadelphia prove radio's targetability (by format) and enormous reach. Today's release touts radio as "the medium that delivers consumers who work fulltime." Study the four-page Arbitron release (with charts on ethnic listening, employment status, targetability and
turnover)

2007 CMT Awards
The first Country awards show of the year was held last night (4/16) as the 2007 CMT MUSIC AWARDS broadcast live from NASHVILLE's CURB EVENTS CENTER. The show, the only fan-voted awards in Country, was hosted by comedian JEFF FOXWORTHY. Stand-out performances were given by a number of Country's finest, including RASCAL FLATTS, KEITH URBAN, DIERKS BENTLEY, KENNY CHESNEY,
MARTINA McBRIDE and TOBY KEITH, as well as a funny opening skit that included BLAKE SHELTON.

One of the finest moments of the evening came when ROSANNE CASH presented singer/songwriter KRIS KRISTOFFERSON with the JOHNNY CASH Visionary Award. KRISTOFFERSON spoke of meeting JOHNNY CASH backstage at the RYMAN and how that encounter impacted his life and career. Another great moment in the show occurred just prior to the last performance of the night when FOXWORTHY gave a great testimony about Country music and why it is so important to him, the artists and the fans.

As the awards began unfolding, it became clear that CARRIE UNDERWOOD would have another big night. She emerged as the evening's big winner for her video of the hit, "Before He Cheats," which won for "Video Of The Year," "Female Video Of The Year," and "Director Of The Year," (ROMAN WHITE). KENNY CHESNEY was no slouch, winning "Male Video Of The Year"; RASCAL FLATTS won for "Group Video Of The Year"; and MERCURY stars SUGARLAND picked up "Duo Video Of The Year."

Newcomer TAYLOR SWIFT won the first award of her career for "Breakthrough Video Of The Year," and BIG MACHINE labelmate JACK INGRAM also won his very first CMT award, in the "Wide Open Country Video Of The Year" category.

And the winners are:

VIDEO OF THE YEAR: CARRIE UNDERWOOD "Before He Cheats"
MALE VIDEO OF THE YEAR: KENNY CHESNETY "You Save Me"
FEMALE VIDEO OF THE YEAR: CARRIE UNDERWOOD "Before He Cheats"
DUO VIDEO OF THE YEAR: SUGARLAND "Want To"
GROUP VIDEO OF THE YEAR: RASCAL FLATTS "What Hurts The Most"

Imus Fallout-The Effects The Losses
Now Playing: Imus Fallout-The Effects The Losses
The Imus story is on the top of every newscast, every blog and search engine and financial publication. I don't condone what Imus said and I can certainly understand why many people where angered by the statement, still right or wrong, Don Imus is a true personality and media legend. For those of us radio junkies who tend to read between the lines and always appreciate a true perspective Jacobs Media  said it best on the JM Blog this week "terrestrial radio has just lost another star that it cannot replace"  And while there are valid points on both sides, Don Imus publically apologized for his slur. Maybe he shouldn't have gotten off the hook too easily, but would he have been fired had it not blown up to such proportions in the media? Here's a last thought from Perry Michael Simon from All Access News-Talk-Sports, "Well, I guess there's not much going on in talk radio this week, so...

Frankly, I don't want to talk about the Imus thing, precisely because everyone- EVERYONE- else is talking about it. It's amazing how suddenly everyone's an expert on a show relatively few people listened to and a team about whose existence most people didn't care. Overnight, Imus became Public Enemy Number One, the Rutgers team ascended to sainthood, and a stupid, unfunny, off-hand slur became The End Of Civilization As We Know It and an excuse to indict the entire talk radio culture. And the cable talk shows were overrun with "experts" ready to make their pronouncements on guilt, innocence, virtue, free speech, hip-hop culture, charity, and radio.

I did not market myself as an expert on this one, because I really didn't want to be one of those people. I have my opinions, and I know what I would have done had I been in a position to make a Solomonic decision to solve the "crisis." But it would have been pointless, considering that I'm not in charge, nobody in charge was consulting me, and going on some cable show where the only way to get your point across is to out-shout the guy in the other little box on the screen wasn't going to do anybody any good. I watched and listened to a lot of those discussions this week, and I heard almost nothing that approached sanity or a calm, proportional reaction to the situation. But that's how the other media cover radio- they don't, until something minor and stupid happens, at which point they overreact until it's an international incident.

If there's one instructive thing to take out of the Imus situation, it's something I've told you before: you can get away with a lot, but the one thing your bosses will absolutely not tolerate is when they get "those" phone calls, meaning complaints. In this case, the complaints were bigger than just phone calls, and they went way, way up to the top of the company, to folks who just do not want or need to be bothered with trouble from some radio show right now. When it becomes clear that those complaints aren't going away anytime soon, not until "something is done," you're toast. Does that mean we're all doomed to walk on eggshells and stick to inoffensive material that won't rock any boats or generate any kind of reaction that might displease corporate? Man, I hope not. "
